How to boot from a cloned boot disk

Abstract

This article details a procedure to use a byte-to-byte copy of a bootable physical volume as an alternative High Availability disk. The procedure has been made obsolete with the introduction of HP Dynamic Root Disk.

The scenario uses HP-UX 11.31 with direct attached SCSI drives. Similar approach can be use for fibre attached LUNS as long as the target LUN is already presented to the system. On HP-UX 11.23 or 11.11 remember to use standard disk naming convention instead of 11.31 agile view scheme.

Procedure

1. Check current disk configuration:

3. Check current boot configuration

4. Boot the system in init 1 to use "dd" command to clone the disks.

5. Modify system alternate boot path to point to the "clone" device.

6. Reboot system and boot from the alternate path in maitenance mode.

7. Correct the LVM system configuration exporting and importing the volume group with the new paths.

Please remember to take a backup using the vgcfgbackup command after activating the volume group.
Also, upon first activation of an imported bootable volume group, make
sure to run lvlnboot(1M) command in recovery mode (-R option) to resync
