HP Smart Array 6402/128 Controller (A9890A) / HP Smart Array 6404/256 Controller (A9891A)

Configuration of Smart Array Raid cards requires the usage of two commands that come in the correponding driver software bundle, saconfig and sautil. How to use this commands is well documented in their corresponding manpages.

saconfig http://docs.hp.com/en/J6369-90051/ch03s02.html
sautil http://docs.hp.com/en/J6369-90051/ch04s04.html

Example

Configure a JBOD with 7 drives using an Smart Array 6404. The intended setup is 6 disks in Raid 1+0 with one spare drive. The selected strip size is 256 Kb.

1. Check the current Smart Array configuration:

# saconfig /dev/ciss6

******************** SmartArray RAID Controller /dev/ciss6 ********************

Auto-Fail Missing Disks at Boot = disabled
Cache Configuration Status = cache NOT configured
Cache Ratio = N/A

---------- PHYSICAL DRIVES ----------

Location Ch ID Size Status

External 1 0 300.0 GB UNASSIGNED
External 1 1 300.0 GB UNASSIGNED
External 1 2 300.0 GB UNASSIGNED

External 1 8 300.0 GB UNASSIGNED

2. Use the "saconfig" command to setup raid volume.

# saconfig /dev/ciss6 -R 1+0 -S 256 -p 1:0 -p 1:1 -p 1:2 -p 1:3 -p 1:4 -p 1:5 -s 1:8

-R: Raid mode
-S: Strip size
-p: Physical volumes that belong the logical volume
-s: Spare physical volume for the logical volume

3. Verify the current Smart Array configuration.

# saconfig /dev/ciss6

******************** SmartArray RAID Controller /dev/ciss6 ********************

Auto-Fail Missing Disks at Boot = enabled
Cache Configuration Status = cache enabled
Cache Ratio = 50% Read / 50% Write
