How to configure a Link Aggregate using Auto Port Aggregation

Abstract

This article explain how to configure a Link Aggregate using Auto Port Aggregation on a HP-UX Operating Environment.

Contents

Procedure

In order to configure a Link Aggregate, you need to make sure that all network devices that are involved are operational and configured properly. Make sure the network speed setting of all devices is the same.

1. Edit /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file.

Assign IP address to the primary aggregate (e.g., lan900):

INTERFACE_NAME[1]=lan900
IP_ADDRESS[1]=192.1.1.41
SUBNET_MASK[1]=255.255.255.0
BROADCAST_ADDRESS[1]=""
INTERFACE_STATE[1]=""
DHCP_ENABLE[1]=0
NOTE: Verify that a default gateway is configured in the file.

2. Edit /etc/rc.config.d/hp_apaportconf file for each interface of the Link Aggregate.

No entries for these interfaces are needed in the netconf file.

HP_APAPORT_INTERFACE_NAME[0]=lan1
HP_APAPORT_GROUP_CAPABILITY[0]=5
HP_APAPORT_CONFIG_MODE[0]=FEC_AUTO

HP_APAPORT_INTERFACE_NAME[1]=lan3
HP_APAPORT_GROUP_CAPABILITY[1]=5
HP_APAPORT_CONFIG_MODE[1]=FEC_AUTO

The HP_APAPORT_CONFIG_MODE will set the configuration mode for physical port specified for the correspondig HP_APAPORT_INTERFACE_NAME option.

The supported values supported values are:

  • FEC_AUTO: Cisco Fast EthernetChannel (FEC) Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP)should be started on the port.
  • MANUAL: Both PAgP and LACP will be disabled on the port and it must therefore be manually added or removed from a specific link aggregation.
  • LACP_AUTO: The IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP)should be started on the port.
  • LAN_MONITOR: Both PAgP and LACP will be disabled on the port and it must therefore be manually added or removed from a specific link aggregation using lanapplyconf landeleteconf commands.

The default value is MANUAL

3. Modify the /etc/rc.config.d/hp_apaconf configuration file for each Aggregated Link.

HP_APA_INTERFACE_NAME[0]=lan900
HP_APA_LOAD_BALANCE_MODE[0]=LB_MAC
HP_APA_GROUP_CAPABILITY[0]=5
HP_APA_HOT_STANDBY[0]=off

You would have to set the GROUP_CAPABILITY entries so that the LANs in a link aggregate lan900 (eg: lan1 & lan3) would have one entry (say, 5). If there is another link aggregate, let's say lan901 would have another entry (say, 3).

LB_MAC this is the recommended configuration when setting up a Link Aggregate between Server to Switch. For other type of configurations check the details in the hp_apaconf file.

Ensure that FEC is enabled if you are using FEC_AUTO ports. For a manual aggregation a non-FEC trunk mode should be used. (See the trunking modes on the HP Procurve.)

4. Stop and restart the APA daemon.

# /sbin/init.d/hpapa stop; /sbin/init.d/hpapa start

5. Verify that the Link Aggregate have been successfully added:

# lanscan
