How to setup Xming X Server

Abstract

The following document explains how to install Xming free X Server for Microsoft(tm) Windows XP, 2003 and Vista. If you are running on older windows servers, you can use to old xwinlogon (circa 2004).

Obtain the software

Installation

Install the Xming Server. If you already use PuTTY as your default ssh client please select no to install a new version of PuTTY. If using Windows XP SP 2 or Vista, the firewall will request to enable access to the application. Please allow any clients to connect to the X server.

Install the Xming fonts. This font package provides additional fonts to improve the appearance of X based applications.

Enable X11 forwarding

To set the DISPLAY enviroment variable after ssh login, please check the "Enable X11 forwarding" box at PuTTY Connection - SSH - X11 - X11 forwarding. The variable will be set to <IP Address>:0, where IP Address will match the desktop computer that start the ssh connection.
